Well over 28 pounds wins Bass N Bucks Summer Series Kick-off on Sam Rayburn

School is out, fishing is in. Bass N Bucks tournament trail kicked off the Summer Series on June 5, 2010 at Lake Sam Rayburn and saw some HOT summer action! Tommy Howard and Jim Furr waylaid the pack winning with over 28 pounds!

Christening the scales with 21.75 pounds, Keith Worthy and Chuck Sheffield didn’t waste any time setting the overall mark to beat and had a Big Bass in their bag at 8.21 lbs. Four more sacks over the 20 pound mark were seen, but only one beat their mark in both categories.

Tommy Howard and Jim Furr brought their five bass limit in with two separate bags. There simply wasn’t enough room in a single bag to bring in their catch. First weighing their biggest, the scales were tipped to 9.44 lbs, establishing the Big Bass win for the tournament. When the rest of their creel was added, their total weight was 28.66, winning the tournament by a landslide.

“It was just one of those days,” Howard reported. “We had a limit by 8:00, probably around 11 pounds.” They were fishing deep water, up to 30′ and had several spots picked out to hit. “We just kept fishing, and catching in every spot.” They were using jigs on main lake points and humps. “It was pretty steady all day, except for a lull between 9-11:00. Jim caught the big one at 11:00, and they started up again.” Steadily culling, their day wasn’t done yet. In the last hour, they made a move to one last spot and culled three more times! Bass N Bucks presented them with a $6,500 check for 1st place and another $1,000 for Big Bass. The team would like to thank Legend Boats and Gary Yamamoto Custom Lures for their support.

Keith Worthy and Chuck Sheffield secured a 2nd place finish with 21.75 lbs. They chose the shallow bite, using frogs. “We had a limit in the boat by 7:45 and culled all day.” They started out on the north end of the lake, working their way south targeting pepper grass. “We had 10 spots picked out, and they were all good.” Keith landed their 8.21 lb kicker around 1:00, then had one last cull at 1:30 before heading in. “We would both like to thank our Dads for teaching us how and to love to fish.”

3rd place was won by Jake and Jody Goodrum with 21.11 lbs. Using watermelon red flukes and frogs, they hit flats and ditches in 6′ depths. “We had all of our fish by 10:00. the best bite of the day was between 8-10:00. When it started slowing down, we tried to fish deeper, and caught our last one. When I was reeling it in, there was a toad (big bass) swimming along right beside him.” The team would like to thank Kicker Fish Bait Co, Bass Cat and Bowden Marine.

Rounding out the top 5, Richard Draper and Phil Marks won 4th place with 20.97 lbs and Butch Carmack & David Curtis took 5th place with 20.14 lbs.

The Ranger Cup Bonus went to Russell Cecil for an additional $250 check, and his partner Wes Schubert won the Cabela’s Bonus also receiving an additional $250.

There are only three tournaments in the Bass N Bucks Summer Series. The next one will be July 10th on Toledo Bend, then back to Sam Rayburn August 7th to wrap up the series and determine final Championship qualifiers.

There will be over $70,000 awarded at the 2010 Bass N Bucks Championship, and the qualifiers from the 1st Series, Conroe Series and Summer Series will be separated into two brackets for two 1st place winners!
