Robby and Dawne Robinson Win It All At Lake LBJ

For many competitors of other tournament circuits, Lake LBJ maintains a tight gripon it’s largemouth. But this was not the case for Robby and Dawne Robinson of SpringBranch, Texas who weighed a combined total of 10.31 lbs. to take top honors on Sunday,May 21, 2000.

Apparently, pre-fishing Saturday was the undoing of several couples that thought theirpatterns established and would hold up through Sunday. After a stormy Fridayevening and early Saturday morning, bass seemed to be cooperating all over the lake.Unfortunately, Sunday was entirely different. Productive techniques changed overnight. The boat docks and other structure that produced so well on Saturday failed mostcompetitors. But the Robinson’s found the secret and made it pay off, with Robby’swinning Big Bass of 4.94 lbs.

Successful techniques and patterns seemed to be plastic jerk baits such as Lake ForksMagic Shad and a Terminator buzzbait worked in “skinny” water of 1′ – 3′ very early. As themorning progressed and the skis turned blue bird clear, the largemouth began to migrateover breaklines and into very thick brush and tree tops on laydowns in 8′-12′ where the baitof choice was Creme plastics; both wacky rigged Scoundrel worms and Texas riggedblack/chartreuse Scremer worms.X-Spurt Pro Formula fish attractant applied to the plasticshelped several couples boat their fish.

Of course, several teams reported boating 20 to 25 fish on every thing from Terminator andHorizon titanium spinnerbaits to 3 inch grubs skipped far under the docks and 3 inch finesseworms. While a variety of lures and techniques were used, conditions and boat traffic madefishing tricky.

This tournament made a significant difference in the Top Six overall standings for the southregion and Lake Buchanan on June 4th will be the last tournament for any couple to qualify forthe Classic that may have not already done so.

Congratulations to Robby and Dawne and everyone that fished with us at LBJ.
