Lonny and Kim McGuffey are 2010 Anglers of the Year for Metroplex Region

Lake Lewisville was the site for final regular season event for The Metroplex Region of The 2 of Us held on June 5. The afternoon temperature reached 100 degrees and our anglers were glad for the breeze and to have an early weigh in. With only a few points separating first and second places in the Angler of the Year race going into today’s final event there were anxious moments in the McGuffey boat when only two keeper fish were landed over the course of the day. As it turned out, Lonny and Kim had nothing to worry about because the second place team could not fill the livewell either. Congratulations to Lonny and Kim for winning the title of 2010 Anglers of the Year in the Metroplex Region. They have been faithful members of the region since joining in 2005 and good friends to all of us. The title is well deserved.

Frank Tenorio and Mimi Thompson prevailed at Lewisville and won First place and Men’s Big Bass with a stringer weight of 15.34 pounds after a quarter pound penalty. Their stringer was anchored by Frank’s largemouth bass which weighed 5.61 pounds which he caught around 1:00 in the area of one of the marinas. Mimi also weighed in a nice 2.9 pound largemouth. They reported catching on Pop Rs and a Lake Fork Tackle stick bait. Frank and Mimi received $336 and a plaque for their efforts.

Second place went to Steve and Donna Benton with a stringer weight of 14.42 pounds anchored by Steve’s 4.29 pound largemouth. Donna also had a nice bass weighing 2.43 pounds. Fortunately for the Bentons they caught a limit early on shaky heads. They might have been able to improve their stringer had they been able to fish all day. Not only did they lose the big engine but also they lost all power to the trolling motor, so they had a shortened day. After calling the directors for help around 10:30 , they were towed in and their fish were transferred into the director’s boat since the fish would not have survived without an aerator. The Bentons loaded up, took their boat to North Texas Marine in Fort Worth and returned to Lewisville in time for weigh in. The Bentons received $25 and a plaque for their great stringer of fish.

Third place was won by Tony Mattson and Candy Lewis with four fish weighing 11.19 pounds after a quarter pound penalty.

Rob Damico and Sharon Williams won Fourth place with a limit of fish weighing 10.82 pounds. Congratulations. Fifth place went to Lonny and Kim McGuffey with two fish weighing in at 4.29 pounds. Third through fifth place received a plaques. Congratulations to all.

Ladies’ Big Bass weighed 4.72 pounds and was caught by Candy Lewis on a Pop R. Frank Tenorio won Men’s Big Bass with a solid 5.61 pound bass. Candy and Frank were each presented with a gift certificate from Brannan’s Bass Shop in Powderly, a plaque and $28. Congratulations.

The side pot was split by the teams of Tony Mattson & Candy Lewis and Rob Damico & Sharon Williams with $45 each. All the teams received a tackle pack including Trilene, soft plastics from Charlie Brewer’s Slider Company, Hard Nosed soft plastics from Mann’s Bait Company and a boat towel from Texas Parks & Wildlife. Other winners include: the McGuffeys and Bentons – gift certificate from ZZ Custom Lures; Sam Moore – Berkeley weigh in bag; Scott DeGrant & Julia Kralka – a set of Berkeley pliers and fishing tools..

Topping off their AOY winning day with another win, Lonny and Kim won free entry to the Championship thanks to the help of Freda at Alfredo’s Restaurant who drew their boat number. Almost all the day’s competitors met there today for dinner after the tournament.

The Metroplex Region will be well represented at the Championship since nine teams have qualified for the event on Lake Brownwood scheduled in October. Congratulations to all.

North Texas Marine deserves many thanks for sponsoring the 2010 season plaques. If you need a new boat, go to North Texas Marine in Fort Worth. As always, we urge you to patronize and promote all the 2010 sponsors including North Texas Marine, Brannan’s Bass Shop in Powderly, Double ZZ Lures and BC Steel. We also want to thank Stanley Jigs and Charlie Brewer’s Slider Company.

It was our sad pleasure to take over again as Metroplex directors following the untimely death of our great friend, fierce competitor and beloved fishing buddy, Jeff Jones. We all miss him and the humor he brought to our tournaments. During their tenure as Directors Jeff and Laurie did a wonderful job. We want to thank everyone who helped us this year at the tournaments. Please continue to lift up prayers for Laurie, as well as Jeff’s family and loved ones in Tennessee during this very tough time.

Have a wonderful and safe summer!
