Toledo Bend - TX,Huxley
Fishing Report

The lake is 163.7 msl, and high pool is 172 msl. Both generators are running from 11am to 8pm. The north end of the lake is stained and clearing as you go south. The water temperature is running in the upper 80s to low 90s. The lake is steadily falling and care should be taken running areas you are not familiar. If you haven’t already heard me preaching about the low lake levels and caution running the lake, you should take heed. To be safe, I wouldn’t run anything but the river channel unless you know the area you are running. No problem launching at Huxley Bay Marina.

Wish I had some promising news, but it looks like we’re still in for some long hot days. The hot weather and full moon made for some “tuff” fishing during the day light hours this last week. All the fish seem to be suspended over the thermo cline around 16 to 20ft or just have lockjaw. One client reported good success on mid diving crank baits in 18 to 20ft of water round creek bends in the middle of the day. The Whites the last couple of weeks have just shut down compared to what it had been (very little schooling activity). If and when we start getting some cooler weather, the fishing should be phenomenal with the low water conditions. I can hardly wait for the fall bite! Now’s the time to be thinking about booking your trip for this fall to get the dates you want.

Below is my typical pattern for this time of year. Not a whole lot has changed.

We’re getting out at first light and trying to pick up some bass on top water plugs, crank baits and plastics off main lake points and then moving to the river channel ledges and drops with Carolina rigs and crank baits. The numbers are not there but the size has been good. Most the better fish have been coming out of brush tops or heavy cover on drops. After a couple hours, we’re then heading to the sand bars and usually loading up the boat on White bass. This week was pretty slow as the Whites had scattered and suspended.

Early morning and late evening work a top water plug, buzz bait, frog, trap, and finesse plastic or shallow diving crank bait around pepper- grass close to deep water. As the sun gets overhead and the bite slows down work soft plastics and deep diving crank baits on the creek and river ledges and main points falling into deep water.

The White bass have moved into their typical summer patterns work the boat lanes, timber- lines and flats close to deep water. Slab spoons and tail spinners working best on main lake sand bars from 10 to 24ft. Chrome traps and top water plugs working best when the bass are schooling. Look for the birds feeding on shad to locate the schooling fish. It’s not hard to limit out in short order once you get into them.

Crappie being caught in 20 plus feet of water around planted brush. Better catches coming in at night.
