Welcome to Toledo Bend Guide Service & Lake Cottage

Toledo Bend - TX,Huxley
Weekly report
The lake is 164.6 msl, and continuing to rise from the recent rains. High pool is 172 msl, with the lake being about seven and half feet low. The lake has risen two feet in the last month making it a lot safer to run many areas but caution should still be used if not completely sure about the area you are running. Water temp is running in the low 50s. The north end of the lake is muddy from the recent rains and clearing as you go south. You can check out the February issue of the Lake Caster for available ramps.
The recent rains, cold fronts and rising muddy water scattered the crappie and slowed the bite way down compared to what we had been catching. Some good limits are still coming in but we got a little spoiled from when we were able to limit out in no time earlier in the season. The crappie are in transition moving from deep water and pre-staging getting ready to move into their spawning flats. The Crappie will start moving into the deep creek channels heading to the backs of the coves. If the lake remains low, we’ll see the crappie spawning in shallow areas of the main lake since there won’t be much if any water in the areas where they normally spawn when the lake is high.
Although the crappie and black bass have been slow the last couple weeks, the white and yellow bass have been on the rampage with limits being caught everyday. We caught over 400 last Thursday with most being males, but we had a number of large females going around 3 lbs, and a number of good hybrids. We’re catching some of the biggest yellow bass I seen in years. A lot of fresh water is coming into the river right now and should push more whites into that area; however, all our fish right now have been coming off the main lake sandbars with slab spoons in 15 to 30 ft. of water. The white bass fishing is getting better every day and it won’t be long before the females start ganging up. A special thanks to the great guys from BP Oil and the Nelson family for a fun week of fishing and helping us clean all those fish.
Some good black bass are being caught on jigs and Carolina Rigs along the river shelf and ledges dropping into deep water. The bite is slow and the numbers aren’t there, but the size is making up for the quantity. Once the lake settles down, stabilizes, and the water temp rises, watch for the blacks to start pre-staging, feeding heavy and start moving to the spawning areas.
We’re looking for a great spring season, so if you like to fish and would like a nice place to stay, give me a call and we’ll try our best to catch some fish and have a good time.
