01/22/2006 Toledo Bend - TX,Huxley Fishing Report 1/22/06 The lake is 162.7 msl, high pool is 172 msl, over nine feet low. Water temp is running in the 50s. The north end of the lake is stained from high winds and clearing as you go south. Extreme caution should be used running the lake even in marked boat lanes due to the low water conditions. For available ramps you can contact the Sabine River Authority. We are still able to launch at Huxley Bay Marina and work continues on adding a couple more boat launching lanes. The low lake level has posed many problems for many people who operate businesses and own property on the lake. Numerous tournaments have been cancelled because of the low level. However, the fishing has been unbelievable this season across the board. Unusually warm temperatures for this time of year and the low lake level have made for a fishing season that will go down in the record books. We’ve had a few slow days when a strong front comes through but overall the fishing has been phenomenal. There are plenty of ramps available for access to the lake and SRA on the Texas side of the lake has taken advantage of the low conditions and opened up a number of ramps. The Crappie still remain the main focus of most fishermen venturing on the lake with ice chest after ice chest coming to the docks all the way from the Huxley area to the Chicken Coop. Although, not many people have been fishing for Black Bass, two double digit fish were brought into Huxley yesterday, one over ten lbs and the other over eleven pounds. The Whites are getting ready to go on a rampage. I’m already getting reports of people catching them in the river and they are loaded with eggs. (I’ll have a better report to give on the Whites next week, as I’ll be searching). All I can say is if you like to fish and catch fish, Toledo Bend is the place to be.
