Toledo Bend Report
Sorry for the delay in sending out a recent fishing report but things have been pretty hectic around the lake since Hurricane Rita. The biggest problems were no electricity, no supplies, and no gasoline, combined with the extreme heat. However, things are slowly getting back to normal. Most of the power has been restored in the Huxley area. Our local store now has gas, but they are presently rationing it to $40 per customer, hopefully that will improve in the next few days. Our facility sustained no major damage and we are back in full operation.
We didn’t get the huge influx of water that was expected from hurricane Rita and the lake only came up about a foot. I expected with ten inches of rain that the lake would be muddy and stay muddy for a while but it’s in great shape. Most marinas and land-owners were hoping for a higher rise in hopes it would open up some more ramps and access to the lake. The lake level is 163.69 msl, almost nine feet below high pool. SRA is reporting both generators presently shut down. Water temp is running in the middle 80s, with most days running above average temperatures, and some record setting days the last couple of weeks. Looks like a nice cold front is heading our way for this weekend and should help “kick- start” the fall feeding pattern. The water clarity on the north end of the lake is stained to clear (any wind will cause the shallow flats to muddy up and stain the surrounding deep water). Caution should be taken running the lake unless you are in the river proper. The high winds from the hurricane pushed a lot of floaters into the boat lanes. Not many places to launch a boat on the main lake. We’re still able to launch at Huxley Bay but it’s limited to one launch, one boat at a time.
Early morning and late evening work a top water plug, shallow diving crank bait, trap, spinner bait or finesse plastic around shallow flats close to deep- water drop offs and main lake points and ridges. As always this time of year and especially with the low water conditions the river ledges are prime areas for the bass to hold. Work the points and bends in the river especially where major and minor creeks and ditches dump into the river. As the water temp cools the bass will start schooling more and the shad will start moving into the coves where the bass will follow.
Looks like we’re in for a banner Crappie, Bass and White Bass season this year with the low water conditions and if the lake remains stable. A little cool weather and everything should start busting wide open.
And a special “THANK YOU” to all our friends and customers who inquired about our well being and offered assistance, supplies and prayers. Come see us!
