Toledo Bend Report

The lake level is 165.94 msl, and still falling (like a rock). High pool is 172 msl. SRA reporting both generators running from 11am to 8pm. Water temp is running in the 90s. The water clarity on the north end of the lake is stained to clear. Caution should be taken running the lake unless you are in the river proper. Not many places to launch a boat on the main lake. On the north Texas side, Huxley Bay Marina still has plenty of water to launch.

I’ve been reading numerous reports on how great the bass fishing has been the last couple weeks but you couldn’t prove it by me or other anglers I’ve talked to that have been venturing out on the pond (which has been very few considering the heat). It’s just been down right “tuff”. We’re catching some fish, but we’re really having to work hard and cover a bunch of water (my gasoline supplier should put me on their board). The best bite has been early, early or late, late and has only been lasting a short time. Some fish schooling during the day but most are small. Better fishing is at night from dusk till dawn, which is typical for this time of year. With the lake falling and the hot water temperatures most fish have pushed into deep water or have been hanging on the edge dropping into deep water. My electronics show a lot of fish and bait- fish suspended in deep water holding over the thermo cline. The better fish we’ve been catching (which are scattered) have been on the ledges dropping into deep water around structure with Carolina Rigged soft plastics in watermelon flavors. Some good fish, also being caught on DD 22’s in pearl, Tenn. Shade and Fire Tiger. The key seems to be getting on the trolling motor and covering a bunch of water. If you catch one, slow down and work the area hard.

The White Bass (same as my last report) have really been finicky the last couple weeks and have been moving all over the lake. While working the main lake river channel sand bars with slab spoons and tail spinners we can load the boat up one day and scratch out the next. Schooling activity on the north end of the lake has slowed way down while good reports of schooling activity have been reported in the mid lake area. Keep a top water plug, trap or shallow diving crank bait handy if they start schooling.

Crappie: Some good reports on Crappie being caught in 16 to 25 ft of water over planted brush. Better catches early in the morning and slowing down as the day heats up. Shiners working best. .
