Toledo Bend Fishing Report 2/9/05
The lake is 170.14 ft msl almost a foot and half higher than last week and rising. High pool is 172msl. Both generators are running full time. Water clarity on the north end of the lake is muddy and stained as you go south with a lot of fresh muddy water still pouring into the lake.
Just when things start to settle down from our last front and the fish start cooperating across the board, we get another couple gully-washers virtually shutting down the bite. Hopefully we won’t get any more rain in the near future and the lake can have a chance to clear and the bite will pick back up. Just typical late winter early spring conditions.
Prior to the rains good reports of Blacks, Whites and Crappie were being had. The Blacks were being caught on a number of patterns from shallow, mid range and deep. The shallow fish were coming in on warm days in 3 to 6 ft on spinner baits, and finesse plastics, Senkos, Flukes and Trick worms. On colder days Carolina or Texas rigs and jigs were catching fish along the deep creek channel drops. Some Blacks also starting to show up on main lake humps and ridges in 10 to 12 ft of water-Black/Blue or Camo jigs working best.
Last week we were hammering the White Bass north of Logansport on Chartreuse Road Runners. All the fish have been huge with the majority being females. Work the back eddies around the points in the river, and any slough or creek that dumps into the river. Once the river settles down the Whites will pick back up.
Some good stringers of Crappie (100 or more) were brought in last week but again they’ve shut down this week with all the fresh muddy water. The Crappie are moving up and down the creek channels heading toward the backs of the creeks and coves, shiners working best.
About the only thing really biting right now are the Catfish. Good reports of Catfish being caught on rod and reels at the mouth of the creeks that dump into the main lake.
