10/26/2004
Toledo Bend - TX,Huxley
Weekly Report

The lake is at 168.38 ft msl, almost 4 ft below high pool (172ft). Both generators are closed. Water clarity on the north end of the lake is stained and clearing as you go south. Water temp is running in the mid 70s.

Unusually high temperatures (record breaking) for the past couple weeks and a strong front that dumped a lot of rain over a four day period a couple weeks ago slowed the fishing down from what we would normally be seeing for this time of year. Recent tournaments reflect the low weights, few limits, and “tuff” fishing conditions in general.

A lot of small bass being caught but the larger fish have been harder to come by. A number of patterns are working on the north end of the lake. Shallow fish in 1 to 5 ft of water along creek channel grass edges are being caught on buzz baits, spinner baits; top water plugs, finesse plastics, scum frogs and shallow diving crank baits. Main lake points, creek drops and river channel shelf and ledges are also holding some fish. Crank baits, jigs, slab spoons, tail spinners and Texas or Carolina rigs working best. As the water temperature continues to cool and the lake stabilizes the bite should pick up. The schooling activity should also increase so keep a shallow diving crank bait, trap and top water plug handy when they start schooling.

Normally the Crappie would be busting wide open this time of year but the high water temp has kept them scattered and the bite has been extremely slow. We need some cool weather to drop the water temperature. Once we get some cooler water we should start seeing the Crappie bunching up over brush tops along the river channel shelf and ledges.

The White Bass have started to move onto the old river channel sandbars in 13 to 16 foot of water. Slab spoons and tail spinners working best. Keep a trap, shallow diving crank bait and top water plug handy when schooling.
