Welcome to Ricky's Guide Service

One of the great things about keeping a log of your fishing trips is being able to go back to it and see what the fish were doing in any given month and start your next trip using the same pattern.  This has paid off for me MANY times in the past and I am certain it will pay off again.  A lot of people come to East Texas each year from out of town, out of state and even from other countries to take part in some of, if not the best, bass fishing in the world.  Now, nothing beats an up to date fishing report, which we also have, but when that is not available logs from previous trips are hard to beat!  I have compiled a condensed version of my logs that detail the patterns that I have seen time and again on these lakes.  Click on the month that you are interested in to see what the fish should be doing when you get here.

Lake Palestine - TX,
November Fishing on Lake Palestine is Looking Great

November, this is the month that many anglers who love to hunt have been waiting for. The deer are moving and the hunters are in their blind waiting for that one big buck to come walking by so that they may get that trophy of a life time.

For us the die hard fisherman, well we really are not very different from the hunters, for we are hunting that trophy fish of a life time. In November you will find the bass putting on weight for the soon to be spring spawn and the crappie will be making their move from the shallow brush piles to the deeper brush piles and like the bass will be putting on egg rolls making them larger and heavier. The cat fish fisherman that run trout lines will begin catching the really big flat heads and the big blue cats as well. The stripe bass and the sand bass will begin schooling up making them easier to find and catch , with all this you can bet your best bird dog you will find me on the water three to five days a week. I will be working hard to put my clients on as many fish as we can catch.

Now here’s what I will be doing to catch the trophy bass and what Lake Palestine will be like in November.

Lake Palestine like most of our East Texas lakes is a bit low, but Lake Palestine is not as low as a lot of the northern lakes. At this time Lake Palestine is about 18 inches low, clear to slightly stained and the surface temps can be found in the low to mid 70’s.

Bass are very good and can be caught a number of ways and here are a few of the ways I will catch bass this month. First when I get to the lake I will have planned my trip at home and will have my rods rigged for the type fishing I will do. When I fish down on the south end I will rig a jig n pig on one rod, another will have a tube jig on it and I will rig two more up one with a spinner bait 1/4 oz. in a shad pattern and the last rod will have a 1/4 oz. rat-l-trap chrome/blue. I will fish docks where I find 8 to 10 feet of water in front with brush. I will fish the tube jig and the jig n pig in and around the brush piles and I will fish very slowly so that I fish the docks as well as I can. The spinner bait and the rat-l-trap I will fish in between the docks and along side of them. I will fish the docks in every way I can and maybe in a way that the other fisherman are not.

Up north I will rig up with a jig n pig, a tube jig and spinner bait. I will fish the creek channels, sloughs and any drainage ditch I can find. When I find grass I will fish the points of the grass. The points of the grass and the points along the channels will be good ambush points for the big trophy bass to surprise their prey. Fish slowly just like down south and you will be the winner at the end of the day.

Crappie will be good on the deeper brush piles and the best lures will be small jigs and minnows.

Sand bass and stripe bass can be found on the main lake points and can be caught on spoons and sassy shads. When they are on top of the water chasing shad you then can catch them on your favorite top water baits.

Catfish can be caught on jug lines and trout lines while using live perch. The best depths will be 14 to 20 feet.

If you are a hunter and you get that big buck and you decide to take a fishing trip down to Lake Palestine to try your hand at trophy bass fishing then try some of these tips I think they will help you. If you need a guide then give me a call at (903)561-7299 or email me at ricky@rickysguideservice.com and I will do my best to let you go away a winner on the water.

Remember a trophy is what you make it and for me the best trophy is not the catch or the kill but the good fortune that the lord gives us each day.

Until next time remember to keep only what you can use and release the rest to fight another day.

Good Luck and Good fishing
Ricky
