Welcome to Ricky's Guide Service

One of the great things about keeping a log of your fishing trips is being able to go back to it and see what the fish were doing in any given month and start your next trip using the same pattern. This has paid off for me MANY times in the past and I am certain it will pay off again. A lot of people come to East Texas each year from out of town, out of state and even from other countries to take part in some of, if not the best, bass fishing in the world. Now, nothing beats an up to date fishing report, which we also have, but when that is not available logs from previous trips are hard to beat! I have compiled a condensed version of my logs that detail the patterns that I have seen time and again on these lakes. Click on the month that you are interested in to see what the fish should be doing when you get here.

Palestine - TX,
August on Lake Palestine
Lake Palestine is at this time at almost full pool, the water is clear and 85 degrees. Fishing this month if you can stand the heat will be very good. I’m at this time doing well on bass on deep diving crank baits and Carolina rigged fry’s on the south end and spinner baits, buzz baits, frogs and rats are doing well over the grass up north in the morning and as the day gets on into the day you will need to go to a plastic worm. Work the grass very slow and you should get some very nice fish.
Crappie will be slow on the south end on brush piles on jigs and minnows. You will find the Crappie best in the 17 to 24 foot range.
Sand bass and hybrids are good early and late on spoons, rat-l-traps and small Mepps spinners. You can find these fish on the main lake points.
Catfish are very good. For years I had quit fishing catfish but the demand for folks wanting now to keep and eat fish has got me back at it again and we are having a blast catching these fine eating fish. I guess catfish are easier to catch than any other fish in the lake and I know they are one of the best to put on the table and that’s just what we are doing. I’m now running at least three trips a week just for catfish. We are rigging up with light tackle and we are having the fight of a life time with these catfish. I’m baiting some spots up to bring the catfish in and we are catching very large numbers of fish each day. Now we catch lots of small fish but still get our limits regularly. One thing to remember is your channel cat and the blue cat need to be at least 12inches long to be a legal length to keep. If you don’t know the limits on fish then stop in your local tackle store if your in town or you can get a book on regulations at the Villages Marina and also at Lake Palestine Camp Ground Marina both on Lake Palestine and by the way both marinas are full marinas with all your gas and rental needs. Get out and try some catfish fishing on your own and you to will love it.
Now I mentioned fishing light tackle, you can ask Tracy Camper of Oklahoma about light tackle as he pulled in the lake record blue cat while fishing with me last September. He landed this 46.4 lb. Blue cat on 8 lb test line and took close to 25 minutes to land it. Now you won’t always catch the big ones but you to can have a great time landing these great eating fish.
If you’re coming to Lake Palestine and need a guide then give me a call or email me and set your day or days up so you to can have a great time while on Lake Palestine. My phone number is (903)561-7299 and my email is ricky@rickysguideservice.com. Be sure and book early for I stay booked up most of the time. I have been a guide here on Lake Palestine now for 28 years so if an experienced guide is what you look for when hiring a guide then I am your guide.
Until next month remember our kids and the future fishing for them and keep only the fish you can use and release the rest to fight again.
