Toledo Bend Yields ShareLunker No. 11

by: Larry D. Hodge,

(Mar. 30, 2004 - Athens, TX) A 13.63-pound Toledo Bend largemouth bass caught by John Martin of Buna, Texas, became Budweiser ShareLunker No. 11 on March 29. The fish is the second ShareLunker to come from the reservoir on the Texas-Louisiana border. Martin landed the 24-inch-long fish about 5:00 p.m. He was fishing in three feet of water with a Sherbert floating worm in a cove off the main flats in Housen Bay, on the Texas side of the lake. The only other ShareLunker to come from the lake was a 13.1-pound fish caught by William Gilbert in 1996. The Toledo Bend record for largemouth bass is a 15.32-pounder caught by Eric Weems on July 3, 2000. Fish entered into the Budweiser ShareLunker program are housed at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. Their offspring are stocked into public waters in Texas to improve the quality of bass fishing in the state. Anglers who legally catch a largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more may have it picked up for transport to Athens by calling (903) 681-0550 or paging program manager David Campbell at (888) 784-0600.
