Photo by North Region | (Jun. 01, 2009 - Lake Bob Sandlin, TX)... Saturday, May 30, was a beautiful day for any outdoor activity - especially bass fishing. The winds were calm and there was plenty of sunshine. The site of the North Region’s tournament was scenic Lake Bob Sandlin outside Mount Pleasant - following a lake change because Lake Texoma was flooded. With water temps in the low 80s there were lots of small fish to be caught. Keepers were not quite as bountiful. It seemed that color was of little consequence - since June Bug, watermelon red and PB&J were mentioned as having successful results. Also, a few teams reported using topwaters and frogs with success.
Scott and Julie Callaway’s five fish limit was the heaviest stringer of the tournament weighing 13.12 pounds. Their stringer also contained Men’s Big Bass for the tournament weighing 3.04 pounds. Julie narrowly missed winning Ladies’ Big Bass with her 3.05 pound largemouth. For their efforts, they took home $252 for first place and plaques. Congratulations. Scott and Julie hurried home after the tournament to attend Alex’s, their son) high school graduation.
Second place went to Jesse and Kathy Timmons who brought in five fish weighing 12.14 pounds. Kathy caught the big bass of the tournament and won Ladies’ Big Bass with a nice 3.1 pound largemouth which she caught before 7 a.m. Their bag also contained a nice 2.95 pound caught on a fluke by Jesse - missing Men’s Big Bass by less than a tenth of a pound . Kathy reported losing a heavy fish when the knot failed - one that she had just retied. Oops. Double check next time.
Third place was won by Barry and Tami Grigg with a limit weighing 10.98 pounds. Barry also reported losing a heavy fish which would have helped their stringer. Fourth place went to the now current points leaders, Dannie and Amy Golden, weighing in four fish for 8.48 pounds - anchored by Dannie’s 2.7 pound largemouth. Fifth place with four fish weighing 6.04 pounds went to Dan ("Rabbit") and Terri Jezek who currently are second in the points race.
Kathy and Scott, the winners of Ladies’ Big Bass and Men’s Big Bass respectively, each took home $21, a gift certificate from Brannan’s Bass Shop and a plaque. Congratulations.

The side pot was split by the teams of Anthony and Johnson with each taking home $35.
The points race for Angler of the Year changed significantly following Sandlin’s event because several of our teams were unable to attend - and they were missed. Dannie and Amy Golden moved up and currently enjoy a four point lead over second place held by Dan and Terri Jezek and ten points over third place holders Jesse and Kathy Timmons who also improved their position. Kyle and Ann Johnson are in fourth - only one point behind Timmons. Dan and Terri have been strong all year; Jesse and Kathy have been a little inconsistent this year but have previously brought in heavy stringers on Texoma - as have the teams of Callaway, Weber, Wood and Waite. With full attendance at our last tournament, any of our teams could prevail. Good luck to all.
For the Huffines loyalty prize there are five teams which remain eligible - Golden, Jezek, Johnson, Anthony and Grigg. (Jesse and Kathy Timmons have fished all five tournaments but do not qualify because they are the reigning Anglers of the Year for the North Region ). From the teams which have paid entry fees to all six of the North Region’s 2009 regular season tournaments, two will be drawn to have their entry paid to this year’s Championship on Lake Lewisville.
We urge you to patronize and promote all our generous sponsors for the 2009 season including B C Steel Buildings, Brannan’s Bass Shop in Powderly, Gary Yamamoto Baits, Bill Lewis’ Rat-L-Trap lures, and Double ZZ Lures.
The final 2009 tournament is scheduled for Lake Texoma on Saturday, June 20 out of Lighthouse. (Lake Hugo’s water level is currently very high so the location was changed to Texoma.)
We will start check in around 5:00 a.m. Safe light is projected as 5:45 a.m. and the tournament will begin at or close to that time - assuming safe weather conditions permit.
See you at Texoma.
