This tournament offered double-points with the top-40 point leaders qualifying for the Regional Championship being held on the Red River, Oct, 16-17, in Alexandria, LA. The top-50 point leaders from the Regional then qualify for the National Championship being held on Lake Dardanelle, in Russellville, AR, on November 11 thru 7, where they compete for $205,000, plus a seat at the 2010 Bassmaster Classic in Birmingham, AL.
Pro/Boaters compete against Pro/Boaters with their 5 bass daily limits, for their heaviest 2 day/10 bass weights to win the Pro/Boater division. Co/boaters compete against Co/boaters with their 3 bass daily limits, for their heaviest 2 day/6 bass weights to take the win for the Co/Boater division. Big bass prizes will be awarded for both divisions.
Day-1 competition eased out under cloudy skies and spitting rain with 52 teams heading to their pre-fishing spots to “hopefully” clinch a seat at the Regional. “Mum” was the word for the leaders going into final competition. The lead went to Bradley Stringer, of Huntington TX, for his 5 bass/18 lb sack and Cary Talbot, of Hemphill followed with 5 bass/17.51 lbs. Roy Sanford, of Brookeland, clinched 3rd with his 5 bass/17.40 lbs. Pro big bass came in with Chris King, of Jasper, for his 7.67 kicker. Michael Mayo, of Jasper TX, led the co/boater pack with his 3 bass/12.59 lbs, and Brett Brandstrom, of Humble, nabbed 2nd lead with his 3 bass/11.70 lbs, which included Co/Boater Big Bass, a hefty 7.85 lb kicker.
Day-2 finals - With misting early morning rains threatening, anglers faced a mirrored image of conditions from the previous day, making 1st day patterns a prime choice for 2nd day angling. But lack of wind and peek-a-boo sunshine the mid-day bite could change the outcome greatly. And it did as the leader board began to shuffle on the final weigh-in.
Top-3-Pro/Boaters; 1st- Charles Dicky Newberry -Houston TX- went to Veach and Buck grass with American Rod-Smith rods to work spinner-baits and cranks to catch his 5 fish limit for 15.72 lbs. On final day Dicky went to Needmore grass and a 24ft brush pile to catch his 5 bass/18.60 lb limit giving him 34.32 lbs for his win.
2nd- Bradley Stringer- Huntington TX- ran up-lake to work Castaway rods to fish grass and pads, catching a 5 bass/18.00 lb limit to take the 1st day lead. Brad flipped sidewinder worms over pads and grass, and cranked stumps on the 2nd day to catch his 5 bass/14.50 lb limit for his 2nd place win of 32.50 lbs. “I just couldn’t get the bigger bass today, stated Brad. I managed to get a 6lber, but after that they were all 2 -lbers.
3rd- Phil Hennigan- of Center TX- used American Rod-Smith rods to fish shallow cloud cover grass with Buzz-baits and spinner-baits to catch his 5 bass/11.58 lb limit. Second day Phil fished the same pattern, catching a 7.39 lb kicker early, going deeper to 14ft grass to catch his final limit of 5 bass/18.47 lbs for his 30.05 lb 3rd place finish. Phil Hennigan also landed the Angler of the Year title for his 1115 point total. Taking the Triton Boats incentive package as well.
Top-3-Co-Boaters; 1st- Brett Brandstrom- of Humble TX- fished grass with spinner-baits and buzz-baits to catch his 1st day 3 bass/11.70 lb limit. Final day found Brett fishing the same patterns with spinner-baits to catch his 3 bass/4.41 lb limit for his 16.11 lb win. Brett also caught the big bass of the tournament, a 7.85 lb kicker on his very first cast of the tournament.
2nd- Ray Minyard- of Sam Rayburn TX- worked wacky worms over grass both days to nab his 2nd place 16 lb win anchored by a 5.70 lb kicker on the final day.
3rd- Anthony Phillip- of Magnolia TX- flippin and spinner-baits on the 1st day and flippin and frogs on the 2nd day put a 15.80 lb total on the leader board for his 3rd place finish.
