Water Temp. 55
Water Clarity 2-3 feet
12/28/08
Sam Rayburn is at 157.65 ft the water temperature has been around 55
degrees. The water has been clear for the most part.
Big Sam has been creeping up a little in the last few weeks from the rain
that we've been getting. Remember that as the lake level goes up we have
some timber that has been on the banks from the big storm to watch for.
This timber was blown down and washed ashore; now with the lake coming up
again some of it has floated free.
We did get out once over the holidays to check on a few fish and found the
deep fish just didn't want to bite anything we tried. That didn't stop us.
We started working some grass edges around a few creeks and found some
that just couldn't help themselves. These fish were setting in a creek
bend. We must have caught 25 fish in there. These fish were all bunched up.
If you got to far one way or the other the bite just stopped. That's
something you have to look for this time of year. You can fish 15 spots
without a bite and then find one that is loaded with fish. Looking back
over some of the books they show this is the time of year that a lot of big
fish are caught. These fish will move up on the pretty days and move back
when a new front moves thru. They don't move far, just to the next drop.
One of the baits you hear so much about this time of year here on Sam
Rayburn is the Rat-L-Trap in "Rayburn Red". This isn't the only one they
hit but it does catch a lot of fish. There are a lot of ways to work this
bait and finding the one they want is the key to putting fish in the boat.
There will also be some fish on some deep points just waiting to move up.
On these spots I would try deep driving Crankbaits and Carolina Rig
Lizards.

The Crappie have been up river. We are booking trips for the springs so
don't wait to long. Round up your friends and get your trip booked. We can
handle up to 10 anglers on the pontoon.
If you haven't heard about The Bass Class on the water check it out on the
website and give me a call. Come learn some nifty little tricks that will
help you bring in your trophy bass.

God Bless
