Sam Rayburn is at 162.72 ft. The water temperature has been around 86 degrees. The water is clear to around 2 ft. The best top water bite has been early and late; not to say you can't plug it out all day and pickup some fish. There are a lot of fish in 3 to 8 foot of grass but getting them to bite takes a lot of time and patience. The lily pads are coming up in lots of places and you will find some fish hanging in them all day. The Stanley Ribbit Frogs pulled over the thick stuff can really payoff at this time off year. Make sure you have some good line on and a heavy rod to muscle them out of that stuff. The Pop-Rs, Yellow Magic and Sebile Splasher are great to work the open holes with. These fish are buried in the grass and it's a lot of work to get them to come out and play. The senkos and whacky worms worked around the grass edges and over the grass holes have been doing good. Crankbaits off the Grass edges and points have been picking up some fish.
The deeper bite has still been slow for the most part. You can get a few to bite on Carolina Rig pull around the drop off and around structure. Most of the bites have been very light and really hard to feel. I know I have missed a lot of fish this pass week thinking it was grass. I look for this bite to improve as the water continues to heat up. We did have a good fish today but it came unbuttoned before he could get it to the boat. It came off the edge of the grass on a Stanley Football Jig.
This week we did a Crappie trip on a client's pontoon boat with his parents and 5 kids. Not all of the kids are his. After getting on the boat I let everyone know the first rule for the day. Now this is a big rule on my boat and it makes the kids shape up. If you don't catch a fish you have to clean the boat. Boy you should see the look on their faces! I've learned over the years that if you help them out a little and play with them some they have a whole lot of fun catching fish. It's about the memories you make when they're young that they will remember thru life and hopefully they will pass on to their kids.
If you haven't heard about The Bass Class on the water check it out on the website and give me a call. Learn some new tricks and surprise your friends when you pick up fish on any lake.
God Bless
