Reel um N Guide Service By Lynn Atkinson
03/16/08 Sam Rayburn is at 162.92 ft and still rising. The water temperature has been around 62 in some of the pockets. The water color is clear for the most part with a little more stain in the upper river and creeks
We are going to look at one of our trips this week that was named " Sam Rayburn Family Match" . Now just to set everything straight The driver of the Skeeter Boat was Win Bunch. He also fished some along with Courtney Buchanan, age 21 from Canyon Texas. Courtney was trying out fishing for the 1st time. Our last fisherman was Harold Buchanan, age 77, from Lubbock Texas. The diver of the second boat, the 929 Nitro, yours truly Lynn Atkinson. I also fished with Dennis Buchanan from Canyon Texas and James Hartman from Amarillo Texas. James was another first timer to fishing. I did slip Courtney my secret bait to help her catch fish. Keeping each other in sight and with the help a some nice radios to stay in touch we set out. The first fish came to the nitro boat; then two more keepers Not far behind Harold bought in a nice fish to take the lead. He snagged a 3.11lbs bass on a C/R.. The heat was on. Now we moved to a new spot and caught a few small fish but were still running behind. We moved over to a ledge that was setting in some timber and began to pickup some more keeper fish. Finally Dennis hung into one and the fight was on. After getting it into the boat we know we had a chance. That fish would weighin at 4.20 lbs. Courtney was fishing hard and bring in fish after fish but just couldn't get that big bite. At 12 we met them at the ramp to eat a picnic lunch and weigh the morning fish. We also took time to get some nice pictures. Dennis had the lead and won the morning round.
That afternoon we made a little run to fish some new areas and found the fish were not hitting very hard. So back we went to the first places to see if we could pickup any more good size fish. As we came around the bend we found Win and his crew pulled into the back of the pocket we had been fishing around early. Being nice folks we let em keep that spot and caught our best fish on the ledge outside the pocket. Dennis and James were fishing soft plastic with a light weight. I was pulling a C/R on the deeper edges. James caught a few keeper fish but we were still looking for a really good one. Dennis caught a few fish but no good ones yet. Then we heard Courtney had caught a good fish. Man did we hear about it! Still behind we fished on. Then I got a small bump and set the hook. It was nice but could it beat the other teams fish? We made a move back to a creek edge and finished out the day with James getting a good fish and Dennis catching a few more. In all we caught about 27 fish, not bad for a little fun. At the end Courtneys fish didn't hold up. The fish James caught was a little bigger but my fish took the lead. Everyone had a great time.
The fish we found in the back of the pockets were small with the better fish still holding out some. We have started to see more fish on the banks looking around, so maybe this next week they will hit the banks.
"New Video on the website!!" I have start to video record a few of the trips and will be adding a few clips each week to the Latest Catch page. It will take you to youtube for now. Please just click back to the website when you are done.
We have started to pickup a few Crappie on the flats but its been slow so far. The fish we have seen were over 2 lbs blacks. Small Crankbaits and Road Runners have been the ticket. Break out the ultra light gear and get ready to fill the coolers
If you need to get away for the day and do a little fishing or would like to check out The Bass Class on the Water give me a call. Thanks and God Bless
