Fishing Report- 1-7-08
Reel um N Guide Service By Lynn Atkinson
01/06/08 Sam Rayburn is at 159'. The water temperature has been in the low 50s and is starting to clear up with visibility to a depth of 3 feet in some of the pockets.
This week has been tough! The fish have been holding tight to cover and hard to get to bite. The afternoon bite has been the best for us over the grass. It seems that as the water warms up in the afternoon the fish move out of hiding and get active. Staying with the grass and slowing down has put some fish in the boat for us. We fished some deep structure early in the week and had good results with a Carolina Rig. Sorry, but even that has slowed down. The fishing should pickup this week as the weather warms up a lot from last week. Staying with the grass and slowing down is very important this time of year . They say if you think you're going to slow you need to slow down some more. I look for the Trap bite to start paying off with some good fish in the next few months. Keep one tied on and check out the creeks and drains and watch for them to stack up in those areas. Remember, if you get a fish take time and work the area over just in case he has a buddy nearby. Sometimes the fish will be in a group no bigger them your dinner table. Just the other day we caught one good fish and would have moved on if one of the guys hadn't gotten hung-up. We stayed in that spot for a few more casts and picked up a fish that went over 7 lbs. If you could have seen the look on this gentleman's face after he got it in the boat. He said he had fished all around and was just daydreaming, working the bait super slow when the rod just loaded up. At first he thought he was snagged in the grass and then he felt the fish jerk on the bait again. Remember check the website for more details on baits and pictures on the latest catch. Crappie having been moving around some. We've been catching a few off the brush piles and some around the bridges.. There are a bunch stacked up in the river channel. Getting the weather to work with you so you can set out there and fish is the hardest thing.
