| Career Highlights |
Like many other pros, Yelas earned a college degree (in resource recreation management) before setting out to follow his dream. That dream would take him from Oregon to Texas, where it would be easier for him to compete on the BASSMASTER Tournament Trail. From the outset of his pro career, western anglers pegged Yelas as one to watch. They were right. Yelas has collected paychecks in 66 percent of events entered on the pro tour. He already ranks 6th in all-time money winnings with $1,065,885 and has fished his 12th consecutive Classic. He has won five B.A.S.S. tournaments, including the 1995 BASSMASTER SuperStars on the Illinois River at Peoria, Ill. and the 2002 Bassmasters Classic on Lay Lake in Birmingham, Alabama.
SuperStars was the turning point in Yelas' career, and his overdue Classic win on Lay Lake in 2002 certainly put the finishing touch on an already stellar career. Winning will not change him as a person, though. Yelas, an active leader in the Fellowship of Christian Anglers Society (FOCAS), most of all wants fans to know that he's "a Christian man who loves Jesus." |
