2001 Bassmasters Classic Preview
07/26/2001 - I didn't find a whole lot to get very excited about during our official practice period for this years' Classic. The last week of June I spent 6 days down there trying to find the right fish to win, but I never caught a big stringer even one day. Out of the 11 Classics I have fished, this was by far the worst practice period I have ever had. It's really not such a bad place to be going in, because I now know that if I do well it will be a 'God thing', and He will be sure to get all the Glory!
I spent two days in the Des Allmonds/Bayou Segnette area (still no grass in Des Allmonds), one day down in Venice(too muddy) and three days in Bayou Black. Bayou Black was the only area I could catch a decent stringer. The best fishing was over in Cearnarvon when we were down there, according to reports from some of my buddies. I have never even been to that area due to the sheer vastness of available water down in New Orleans. You simply cant fish everything, so I just choose a couple areas and hope I guess right. That is all anybody can do down there.
My game plan is to stick to areas in Bayou Black that have produced big bass in the past and hope I can figure them out better during the Classic. I am going to try to get them flipping a jig, Berkley Powerhawg or Power Tube. I will pack a few crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwaters, but feel 80% sure the event will be won with the flipping technique.
I am going to attempt, for the first time, to make nightly postings on this website as the Classic week progresses. They will probably be brief, but I want to give all my fans the inside story.
Until then, God Bless.
