2004 Mid Season Update
BASS Tour
03/08/2004 - Mid Season Update:
We have had four tournaments so far this season. I have fished 3 decent tournaments, and bombed at the Guntersville event. I had my best day of the season the final day at Table Rock, and I am feeling like I am now hitting my stride for the remainder of the season.
The Guntersville event killed me in the point standings this year. That lake is my achilles heel. It always has been. I have fished 7 tournaments on Guntersville over the years, and I have never made the money there. To this day, Guntersville is the only lake in the country where I have never made the money! What is so strange is the fact that it is one of the top 5 bass lakes in the country, and I can not figure out how to fish it. The Tennessee River lakes as a whole have always been tough on me, but especially Guntersville. I guess I just need to spend about a month on the lake.
I caught my fish flipping and pitching at the first two events: Harris Chain, FL(pitched a worm) and Smith Lake, AL (jig). I finally got on a spinnerbait bite at Table Rock. It has been bothering me that I have not been finding spinnerbait fish at the other tournaments this season. Those who follow my career closely know that I caught 44% of my fish last season (2003 AOY) on spinnerbaits. It is a major strength of mine, and when I can't find the "blade" fish, I am running low on ammunition.
I found some spinnerbait fish the second day at Table Rock. It was a very tough bite to find, but the biggest sacks of the event came on spinnerbaits. It was a deal where you had to throw it all day to get 5 or 6 bites on it. When the bite is that slow, it really helps to catch a couple good fish early in the day on the spinnerbait to give you the confidence to stick with it all day. That happened to me the second day a Table Rock. I had a couple good ones early on it, and I just stayed with it all day, finally limiting around 1 pm.
