    FLW Open Summary

04/24/2002 - The FLW Open was again a sightfishing contest, as it has been most other years. This year it was a little crowded on the lower end of the lake as the upper half of the lake was too muddy to see fish on beds. I would guess that 100 boats fished the lower 1/5th of the lake during the preliminary rounds. I fished this area as well, and finished 16th. Not a great finish, but I wanted to make special note of this decent showing. I want to reiterate the point that the most important thing in tournament fishing is figuring out the fish. If you can do this, it doesn't matter how many other boats are around you, you will catch fish and do well. You may not win if you fish in a crowd, but you can do well.

I always prefer to get away from the crowds during tournaments, but I don't always find bass away from the crowds. In this case, I only had 3 days to practice. I spent the first day looking for overlooked water, but nothing worked. So I took the safer bet and fished the clear water by the dam with everyone else.

My 16th place finish at Beaver Lake has put me in contention for Angler of the Year on the FLW Tour. I like the final two lakes on the schedule, Old Hickory and Champlain. One thing I have learned about fishing is that you never know what is going to happen. So I wont make any predictions other than the fact that I will keep my nose to the grindstone.
