Red River, LA
Bassmaster Tour, Nov. 1-3
11/14/2001 - The Red flooded back in mid October, but had settled back to normal pool by the time our practice began. The main river, however, was still quite muddy early in the week, and nearly everyone concentrated on the backwaters in practice because they held clearer water. As the week progressed, the main river kept clearing, and the fish started biting out there the first day of the tournament. This main river bite got better each day, and Davy Hite ended up winning the event on the main river.
I found my bass in oxbows in pools 5 and 4. The fish were really buched up in certain small areas, mostly near deeper holes where the bait was concentrated. I fished a pretty good tournament, just ran out of fish after day 3. The Red River doesn't seem to take fishing pressure very well. My experiences there have been that an area may produce for a day or two, but that's it. I abandoned my water on day 4 and tried to find some main river bass. I did, but they were just small keepers. It is always a big gamble to go hunting new water on the final day of a tournament. But in this situation, I was in 9th after day 3, and could fall no lower than 10th, so I had nothing to loose by running new water the last day. I ended up in 9th place after catching a 5# limit the last day on the main river.
