(Oct. 15, 2013 - FORT LAUDERDALE, FL)...
Guy Harvey, Chairman of Guy Harvey Outpost LTD. announced today the company’s entry into Isla Mujeres, Mexico, a favorite resort destination for divers and fishermen located just offshore of Cancun. ?Joining the Expedition Collection of Guy Harvey Outpost is the Hotel Playa Media Luna, a beachside boutique hotel located on island’s popular north beach just blocks from its lively downtown district. ?The hotel’s Keen M Bluewater Adventures sportfishing operation has become a member of the company’s Expedition Outfitter system.
In making the announcement, Harvey commented, "With Isla’s great fishing, diving and underwater filming opportunities and convenience to South Florida, I’m a regular guest of Hotel Playa Media Luna and Keen M. ??They’ve always been very close friends; I’m absolutely thrilled to now have them as part of my Outpost family."
The Outpost system now includes two Signature resort properties in Florida and five Expedition lodges spread across the Bahamas, Galapagos Islands and now, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Small in comparison to nearby Cozumel, Isla Mujeres enjoys an outsized reputation among travelers looking for a "laid back" resort vibe in the so-called Mexican Riviera. ?"Cruise ships don’t call on Isla, so the experience here is that of a sleepy fishing village with a diving problem," says Mark Ellert, President of Outpost, in describing the destination. "Isla Mujeres is a bucket list destination for scuba divers with its fascinating Underwater Museum of Art. ?Add to that beautiful coral reefs, the whale shark migration and the chance to dive on massive bait balls during sailfish season. ?All of it makes for an exhilarating dive destination, and don’t even get me started on its’ world class fishing."
Speaking on behalf of her family’s ownership of Hotel Playa Luna Media and their legacy of Isla Mujeres hospitality, Ms. Kin Lima de Mendillo commented, "Hotel Playa Luna Media and Keen M are a family affair. ?We’re passionate about what we do and want customers to experience the authentic Isla, like a local. ?Guy’s visits and experiences here with us helped shape the vision for the Expedition Collection of Guy Harvey Outpost, so we know we’re in great company joining with other hotel owners in the Guy Harvey Outpost system." ?
Hotel Playa Media Luna is one of five hotels in Kin’s family. ?"Playa Media Luna is a secluded ?Half Moon’ shaped beach making for a private retreat and all of our rooms face directly at the cove," she notes. "This area of Isla’s beachfront has been in the family for generations and we picked this beach for a reason." The hotel has 20 rooms and suites. ?Only five blocks separate the beach on the east side of the island from the marina dock on the west. In between is the town’s popular pedestrian esplanade, Hidalgo Avenue. "Most everyone gets around by foot or golf cart, and no one ever gets lost, unless maybe the party went on too long," she laughs.
At the dock, the Keen M fleet operates under the helm of Captain Anthony Mendillo Jr., a former New England sportfishing captain who settled into Isla over 20 years ago. ?Repeated seasonal pilgrimages to Isla for the legendary sailfish migration introduced Anthony to Kin and her family’s varied hotel and marina holdings. ?"I landed a grand slam - a beautiful wife, a wonderful family and the best sportfishing this side of Caribbean." Mendillo’s good looks and boyish charm belie his long list of tournamentvictories and industry recognition. ?He is an international representative to Mexico for the International Game Fishing Association, IGFA and the subject of numerous articles in Marlin Magazine among others.
Keen M operates three boats ranging in size from 34 to 41 feet from, specializing in offshore sportfishing, while offering a range of customized snorkeling, diving and underwater filming adventures. "Guy’s autographed a lot of things, but I believe I’m the only guy who has his autograph inked on the galley bulkhead of their sportfish boat," Mendillo laughs. ?"He spends so much time on my boat, it’s not like I’m going to forget who he is."
