(May. 18, 2012 - Miami Beach, FL)... The 5th Annual Publix Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic, held May 11th and 12th, 2012 at Miami Beach Marina, was a huge success. The tournament, in honor of Jim "Mad Dog" Mandich, was hosted by Joe Rose. Anglers, sponsors and guests enjoyed a fantastic weekend of fun for the entire family.
The one-day fishing tournament, which benefited Shake-a-Leg Miami and the Coastal Conservation Association, targeted dolphin, kingfish, tuna and wahoo. The event kicked off Friday evening with a festive Kick-Off Party and Captain’s meeting at Texas de Brazil. Anglers received Hook & Tackle Solar tournament shirts, hats and Publix angler bags stuffed with goodies.
On Saturday, a beautiful, but breezy morning greeted the teams as they headed out of Government Cut for a day of fishing. The competition was strong, which showed as more than half the fleet brought fish to the weigh station. After all the fish were weighed, the winner was team Thomas Flyer with a total of 151.5 points from the various fish they weighed, including a 31.5 lb tuna. The team, captained by Jimbo Thomas, took home total winnings of $12,625. This was for the $10,000 Top Boat prize, 1st Place Fun Fish Fortune for $2,125 and $500 for the heaviest tuna. Second place in the tournament was team Contender One with 128.7 points. Team Contender One also won the Mega Mahi and 2nd place Funfish Fortune bringing their winnings to $5,187.50. The Contender One team also received additional honors when Ivan Souto won Top Angler and Ridge Murphy captured Top Junior. Third place was Sand Bob with 120.5 points. Sand Bob also brought in the heaviest fish of the day, a 35.5 lb dolphin caught by Ted Bone. The Top Lady Angler award was won by Jessica Ocasio aboard the Team Fine Awards boat with 29.3 points.
After the weigh-in and dock party, anglers, sponsors and guests enjoyed a fantastic silent auction and dinner at Texas de Brazil. During the awards ceremony the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic was proud to donate $7,500 to Shake-a-Leg Miami and $2,500 to the Coastal Conservation Association. These donations have brought the tournament’s charitable donations to over $130,000.
