(May. 05, 2012 - MARATHON, Florida Keys)... A team of three friends from Pennsylvania and New Jersey took top honors at the Tarponian Invitational that wrapped up May 2 in Marathon after three evenings of fishing.
Dennis Cooper of Huntington Valley, Pa., John Rokita from Doylestown, Pa., and Long Beach Island, N.J., resident Vince Farias released five fish for the overall win.
Second-place team honors were awarded to another Doylestown duo, Bruce Scheeler and John Nyce, who joined San Franciscan JB Scheeler to land four tarpon.
The high-energy tournament mandated that all teams must fish with a different captain each evening so no one group of anglers had any advantage with potential "hot spots."
Teams rotated among the three major bridge channels in the Middle Keys ? the Seven Mile, Long Key and Bahia Honda bridges.
Because of this format, captains were awarded for the overall numbers of tarpon their boat landed.
The first-place captain was Billy Rabito Sr. of Marathon aboard A1A with four fish. Captain Jack Callion, also of Marathon, tallied four fish aboard the Power Wagon to land the second-place captain slot.
Anglers on 24 boats released 30 tarpon in the 2012 tournament. |
