A/Q Wednesday Conroe Championship
|(Oct. 15, 2007 - Lake Conroe, Conroe, Tx)... Anglers Quest 2007 Wednesday Series Championship is now in the books, and the Wednesday Conroe Series is complete for 2007. The event began on Friday evening with the presentation of the special Trophies to 2007 Anglers of the Year, Julian Clepper, as he fished the entire series as a one man team. Julian will receive free paid entries to all A/Q Wednesday Series Events in 2008. The Top 10 Angler Teams of the year were awarded Top 10 Plaques with the statistics of all 23 2007 Wednesday Series events engraved. The $50 per team donated raised a Big Bass Pot totaling $1250.00. The Calcutta Auction followed and sold teams from $60 to $1505 and raised $13,365.00 to add to the anglers pot. Lake Conroe water was in good shape at about normal pool. The weather was very nice with 5-15 mph breezes on day 1 but turned a lot more windy on day 2 of the event with both days in the mid 60’s at daybreak to mid 80’s during the days. As Day 1 got underway with the playing of the national anthem, the 24 Qualified Teams took off into the dim morning light at 7:00 am going for the $19,185.00 purse which was the payback at this Championship event. |
Julian Clepper from Magnolia, Tx ran his Skeeter/Yamaha rig to areas north of the 1097 bridge in 3-4 ft water to bring 5 Bass to the scales using Castaway rods, Shimano reels & 15 lb P-line loaded with very small crank baits to lead the way on day 1 with 23.91 lbs. One of Julian’s bass was a fine 8.36 lber that ends up being the Big Bass of the event and made him $750. for that one bite.
Steve Lee from Conroe & King Tieken from Anderson, Tx ran their Skeeter/Yamaha rig to south main lake areas in 10-12 ft water to bring 5 bass that tipped the scales at 16.25 lbs using Castaway rods, Shimano reels & 10 lb fluorocarbon line loaded with RC series crank baits to hold down the 2nd spot on day 1.
The team of Cody Ogrodowicz from Cypress & Jeremy Mazyn from Tomball, Tx ran their Basscat/Mercury rig to south Atkins creek areas in 5-11 ft water and brought 4 bass to the scales that weighed in at 11.58 lbs using G-Loomis and Castaway rods tipped with tx rigged worms to grab the 3rd spot on day 1.
The team of Matt Beggs from Conroe & Eddy Thomas from Willis, Tx ran Matt’s Stratos/Yamaha to areas around the 1097 bridge in 3-8 ft water using American Rodsmiths rods with Garcia & Revo reels tipped with shakey head red bug trick worms to catch 3 bass at 10.94 lbs to hold down the 4th spot on day 1. The team of Joe Bruno from Cypress & Robert Baney from Montgomery, Tx filled the 5th spot on day 1. They had 4 bass that tipped the scales at 10.70 lbs.
Day 2 was a beautiful day and got underway at 7:00 am after the playing of God Bless the USA. Julian Clepper brought 5 more bass to the scales that weighed 12.16 lbs to give him a 2-day total of 36.07 lbs and the 1st place A/Q Trophies.
Julian did not purchase his team in the Calcutta on Friday evening and ended up collecting $2750.00 for his day on the water. Chad Petros bought Julian in the Calcutta for $1505 and collected the 1st place Calcutta check for $4675.00, in return for the great performance Chad give Julian $500 for his efforts and since Julian got 2 A/Q Goal Posts he give Chad one of them, nice touch from both guys.
Lee & Tieken brought in 5 more bass on day 2 that weighed 16.26 lbs to give them a 2-day total of 32.51 lbs. They also had a fine 6.76 lber that garnered the 2nd Big Bass of the event and claimed $500. They did buy their team in the auction for $905 and took home 2nd place and $4940.00.
Ogrodowicz & Mayzn brought another 4 bass at 13.55 lbs to the scales on day 2 to boost their 2-day total to 25.13 lbs and claim 3rd place. Dad, Daniel Ogrodowicz bought the team in the Calcutta for $350 giving them a $3325.00 payday.
The JCS Granite sponsored team of Charles Bebber from Conroe & Ricky Johnson from Willis, Tx managed to bring in 8 bass to bring their day 2 total to 23.99 lbs and claim 4th place and $420.00. Robert Baney bought the team for $250 in the Calcutta and collected a kool $2000.
Terry Ponfick from Hockley & Mike Mueller from Magnolia, Tx weighed in a total of 5 bass at 18.28 lbs over the 2 days and collected 5th place and $875.00.
