At its recent annual convention Oct. 25-28, 2001 in Venice Louisiana, the President of the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association, Gordon Hutchinson, awarded Baton Rouge native, Richard Evans with the Year 2000, Fish of the Year award. Using flyfishing tackle and a hand tied fly (lure), he landed a Yellowfin Tuna, weighing 74.0 lbs. in the Gulf of Mexico at the "Midnight Lumps" in February of 2000 aboard Charter Captain Peace Marvel’s boat out of Venice, LA. His catch ranks as No. 1 in the Saltwater Flyfishing Division of the Louisiana State Fish Records.LOWA has been the curator for the Louisiana State Fish Records since the early 50’s and awards an outstanding catch each year at its convention for the previous year selection. Candidates for FOY are nominated by the membership and the Fish Records Committee. Winners are selected by the Fish Records Committee and announced at the annual convention.
