(Jul. 15, 2008 - Kaufman Co, TX)... Recently our Club members were privileged to assist with the Kaufman Police Association’s Annual Blue Gill Tournament. The tournament is held at the Star Brand Ranch just outside of Kaufman, TX, east of Dallas.
Approximately 75 children attended, with ages ranging from three years up to fifteen. Trophies were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each age group as well as for the "Small Fry" and "Jaws" award.
We enjoyed watching the excitement of the small anglers as they pulled in one after another of the feisty little fish. Every participant caught at least one fish and several culled many of them. It was also a good opportunity for us to help teach knot tying, casting hints, etc. to some of the "future tournament anglers". We were happy to see as many young ladies out there as there were young men.
An unexpected downpour showed up just as we were weighing in the fish but it failed to dampen the spirits of the little anglers. They stood in line through it all, carefully handing over their catch, hoping to win a prized trophy. Not only were trophies awarded, there were stacks of assorted fishing equipment that had been donated for the tournament. In fact, there were so many that each child who fished received two great prizes. The Kaufman Police Association did an outstanding job of soliciting donations this year!
This was our third year to be able to participate in the tournament and we are looking forward to next year. I think we have as much fun or maybe more than the contestants!
