(May. 30, 2008 - Lake Sam Rayburn, TX)... C.A.S.T. Southeast opened up a beautiful Memorial Day weekend with their fifth regional tournament of the season on May 24, 2008 out of Jackson Hill Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn. John & Jennifer Anderson greeted the Southeast couples for registration and breakfast provided by the great staff of Jackson Hill. The tournament began with overcast skies but would clear up in the middle part of the day changing to blue bird skies and HOT. C.A.S.T. couples raced to their spots to try and catch a few quality Sam Rayburn bass before having to work around other boaters and some jet skiers out on the water. Our couples found many different patterns to be productive. Fish were caught in shallow grass, lily pads, outside grass edges, and deep water offshore structure.
Many of the C.A.S.T. couples utilized their new "Just Keepers" weigh in bags from Duncan Enterprises, www.duncanbags.com, to bring their limit of fish to the scales.
The winning couple, Johnny & Jolyne George, brought in a nice limit of Sam Rayburn bass with a total weight of 19.95 lbs. They started the day off shallow and were able to pick up four fish quick before the jet skiers and wake board crowd shut them down. Johnny & Jolyne did not let the heavy lake traffic stop them. They decided to move out to the outside edge of the deeper grass lines and were able to pick up their fifth fish; a real nice "KICKER" that weighed 8.39 lbs. Congratulations to this successful team on a great WIN!
The 2nd Place team of Landan & Anne Ware, brought in a limit of Sam Rayburn bass weighing 17.96 lbs. Landan & Anne are a mother/son team who fish very well together. Landan had to fish solo this weekend but didn’t let that stop him from establishing a pattern. He started out fishing buck brush but was unable to catch fish with any real size to them. He decided to back out to the shallow grass and lily pads but was still unable to find fish with enough size to weigh in. Landan’s next move was to use his big Lowrance Sonar/GPS unit taking him to offshore structure where he was able to establish a deep water pattern. Congratulations on figuring out how to catch ’em!
Finishing in 3rd Place with a total weight of 16.94 lbs. was one of CAST Capital Region’s own couples, Dean Perkins & Debbie Peden. Dean & Debbie have a lake house on beautiful Sam Rayburn. Their strategy was to fish shallow all day. This strategy enabled them to cull all day long also. Dean & Debbie said their fish were located in a small area and did not move much through out the day. Congratulations to this great couple on their finish.
The Big Bass award went to a couple who are not strangers to catching really BIG BASS. Nick & Sharon Albus came in with the big fish of the day, a 9.83 lb. HOG of a bass! Nick & Sharon pre-fished the day before and hooked this fish on the third cast of practice. Nick said the fish looked to be 8 lbs and after jumping a few times the fish came off. They decided to go back to this fish during the tournament and on the second cast were able to get into a great fight with this BIG FISH. Within minutes Nick & Sharon had their big fish in the boat capturing the BIG BASS award. Congratulations to this couple on their catch.
