(Feb. 09, 2009)... A hint of Spring is in the air, and was felt with the wind February 7 at Cypress Bend Resort on Toledo Bend. 212 teams signed up to win part of the $47,300 all cash payback. It was a great day to fish, as evidenced by the heavy stringers and big bass brought in.

Due to the windy conditions, Tournament Director Dave Concienne allowed the teams to trailer their boats to other launch locations after checking in at the tournament site and getting their boats checked. Toledo was ready for the contenders, and several big stringers and hawgs were brought back to the scales that afternoon.

Darold Gleason and Chris Schamerhorn brought in the winning sack weighing 28.74 pounds. Their plan was simple and concise. They had one spot picked out to put a limit together, and another spot to find their kicker. "It was a beautiful day" the team agreed. Using Stanley Bug-eye football head jigs trailered with Berkley Chigger Craws as well as DD-22’s, they had a full limit in 20 minutes. "Our first spot gave us about 24 pounds worth, which included a couple of six pounders." Around lunch time they moved to their big bass hole. "It was a small spot at a ditch, about the size of the back of a pick-up." Running their bait through this ditch area in about 15-18’, they were able to cull two of their four pounders with bigger fish. Their kicker weighed in at 8.71 lbs. Their weight held a dominating lead over the rest of the pack and Bass N Bucks presented them with the $15,000 1st place purse. "We’d like to thank Stanley Jigs for sending us a rush order before the tournament." They would also like to acknowledge Castaway rods, Schamerhorn, Inc and the Toyota Bonus Bucks program.

In 2nd place with 24.78 lbs was the team of Sam Creel and Joel James. "We hit secondary points in the mid lake area." Fishing depths 9-15’ at the breaks of grass edges, they had caught all of their fish by 10:00. "Mostly we were using Carolina rigs, but we caught some on traps too." They said the fish just shut down on them after that and they were off the water by 1:30. Their 2nd place win totaled $4,000. "We’d like to thank Team PMF!"

Team Upshaw, father and son Larry and Andrew came in 3rd place overall with a double digit kicker! Andrew heaved the heavy bass to the scales and rocked it to 11.96 lbs. It held as the heaviest of any weighed in, and the team won $1,000 for their Big Bass. Setting the other four of their catch with it their weight was 23.32 lbs for a 3rd place win and an additional $2,000. Andrew had to rush back to work at their business, Tri-Lakes Tackle in Lufkin, TX but Larry was on hand to recant their day. "We were fishing a ditch about 12’ deep. Andrew was using a football head jig, and that big one was the first fish of the day (7:15)!" Great way to start any day, and they continued to catch about 11 keepers before weigh in also using Texas and Carolina rigs. Among their creel was a Kentucky spotted bass that Larry had caught. It weighed 3.40 lbs and was eligible to be a lake record.

The current lake record for Toledo Bend Spotted Bass is 2.62 lbs. Louisiana keeps state records, and Texas keeps state and water body records. Texas Parks & Wildlife acknowledges records caught on the Louisiana side of Toledo Bend as well as the Texas side, as long as the catch is verified by a Louisiana biologist. Ricky Yeldell is the Louisiana Biologist in the Toledo Bend area. The length, girth, weight and species must be determined by the biologist for the fish to be entered into the lake records. In the event that a biologist cannot be located, take a couple of good pictures of the fish and weigh it on certified scales. Certified scale locations are listed in The Lakecaster. Save the fish then contact Todd Driscoll, TP&W biologist at 409-384-9572.
