(Aug. 11, 2008 - Umphrey Family Pavilion ,Lake Sam Rayburn, TX)... Bass N Bucks tournament trail held their last event for the 2008 season at the Umphrey Family Pavilion on Sam Rayburn. It has been a lucrative season for many anglers, cashing in on part of more than $300,000 paid out so far this year in all cash payback. Fishing on Big Sam has been reportedly tough for many in recent weeks, but four teams still managed limits over 20 pounds in this event. The father and son team of Doug & Mason McCain nosed ahead of the pack to take the win with over 25 pounds! Several big bass were weighed in, but it was a double digit monster that took Big Bass standings.Landan Ware was the first to the scales with his 21.80 lb creel. His wife Becky normally fishes with him but could not join him this day. "I just headed about mid-lake and fished DD-22’s and Carolina rigs" Landan explained. He focused on ridges with grass in depths of 12’-15’. "(The day) started out real slow. I cranked my DD-22 in the morning, and managed about a 13 pound limit by 9:30." He caught his biggest of the day, 6 pounds even, about 8:30. "After that I started throwing a Carolina rig and culled three or four times. My last good cull was at 1:00. I had a little one I really needed to get rid of, and culled it with a four pounder." He caught all of his fish with Power Tackle Rods. "I missed my wife and partner today. If she’d have been there, we probably would have won!"
His weight was topped by Alan Moore and Robert Davis. First, their monster bass was weighed tipping the scales to 10.26 pounds! Adding their other four bass to the scales, their weight totaled 24.84 pounds. Their plan was simple and concise. They had narrowed their fishing spots to two areas. "We went to our first spot and didn’t catch anything. After a while we moved to our second area and put a limit together." They were fishing big Texas rigged worms around drainage areas with grass in 6’-10’. "We caught a lot of fish. Around noon we decided to go back to our first spot and see if the big ones had moved in." It was the right decision. Robert latched on to their 10 pounder there which marked their last cull of the day, trading that one for a two pound bass. They wanted to thank Tri-Lakes Tackle and Terry’s Marine for their support.
There were only a few people left to weigh in, and Doug & Mason McCain were among them with a noticeably large sack of fish. They had a nice kicker in the bag which was weighed first. She weighed 9.10 lbs, missing the established Big Bass mark. Eyeballing the rest of their limit, it was going to be a close run for 1st place. Their weight tallied 25.28 pounds to take the win! "We had a great day, didn’t miss a single bite!" Doug explained. Mason had caught the nine pounder, and re-capped their day. "We used jigs all day. The trick was how we rigged them." Not divulging the secret of their rigs, he reported catching a lot of solid two pound kickers until 8:00 when he hooked the big one. "We were fishing a big drain lined with hydrilla." They positioned their boat in 10’ or less depths, and pitched in areas 4’-7’. "The rest of the day we’d catch one here and one there. Dad caught our last fish, about 5 pounds. That one really made the win." This duo has been fishing tournaments together for the past 10 years or so and have made several strong finishes. This is their first 1st place Bass N Bucks win!
In a tough battle for the Angler of the Year title for the Summer Series, the points and pounds were added up for each team. Consistency and hard work paid off - Doug and Mason McCain won. This entitles them to not only bragging rights, but their entry fees for the 2009 Summer Series will be waived.
This was a combination event, also being the last tournament for the Conroe Series. The Angler of the Year winners in the Conroe Series were Charles Bebber & Keith Caka. They have had a fantastic year and fished all of the Bass N Bucks tournaments this year. They also finished top three in the overall points standings for the 1st & 2nd Series. Great job!
