(Jun. 23, 2008 - Lake Sam Rayburn, TX)... Bass N Bucks held their Summer Series kick-off June 21 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion on Sam Rayburn. It was a jam-packed weekend of events, with large tournaments on all of our area lakes. Despite all of the other events going on, this was one of the largest Bass N Bucks Summer Series events yet! It was a combination tournament, the first for the 2008 East Texas Summer Series combined with the fourth event in the Conroe Series. Todd Castledine & Brent Broussard dominated the pack weighing in more than 27 pounds. It was a great summer day to be on the lake. The morning started off fairly cool, and there was a steady breeze all afternoon to help with the rising temperatures. Spotty showers in the area caught up with some teams but the sun shined on Castledine & Broussard as they caught their winning limit.
"Our morning started out a little slow" Todd explained. "We boated two big ones early, and once we figured (the bass) out we just kept with that same pattern the rest of the day." They caught a lot of their morning fish on topwater baits and worms. "The areas we kept hitting had grass in 5-9. The bigger fish were on the deeper sides of those areas. After the topwater bite quit, we switched to Strike Pro crank baits and also used some swim baits." They watched as rain showers hit all around them, but never got a drop of rain on them. "The Lord was with us today. It was a good day!" They caught their last fish at 2:15, then headed in to the 2:30 weigh in. Once checked in, they went to the stage to get a feel for how the weigh in was progressing. Bringing in their heavy sack of bass, first their biggest was weighed at 8.34 lbs. The other four were added for a total stringer of 27.26 pounds! Bass N Bucks presented them with a 1st place winning check of $7,000 and another for the biggest bass of the tournament for another $1,000. They were fishing out of Brents qualified Ranger Boat and also won the top Ranger Cup payout of $2,500. "Wed like to thank the Lord for being with us today. Wed also like to thank Ranger Boats and Strike Pro Lures."
Lone angler Ryan Pinkston caught the 2nd place stringer of 25.98 pounds. His kicker rivaled that of Castledines, weighing 8.04 lbs. "Mostly I just hit deep structure in 15-25. I only caught ten fish all day, and seven of them were keepers." Ryan said he lost two good ones that may have put him in the winning seat. He only used two presentations. A Carolina rigged centipede and Jewel jigs. "The mid morning bite was best. I hit eight different spots and had a pretty good day." Ryan won $3,000 for his efforts. His sponsors include: Farm Bureau, Wulf Outdoors, Town & Country Marine and Southwest Tackle.
Jonathan Garrie and Kendall Wleczyk won 3rd place with 22.81. Their day started off well, the first fish they put in the boat weighed 4 ½ pounds. "We didnt get another bite for four hours" Kendall said. Jonathan added "We went to a few other good spots, but there were already lots of boats on them." They were searching for flats with hydrilla in 6-10. "We just went back to our first spot and stayed there all day." They were pitching 1 ounce Stanley jigs, and managed six keepers. That included a couple of nice six pounders that boosted their overall weight considerably. They took home $2,200 for their 3rd place win and would like to thank Strike Pro America, WileyX, Vicious Fishing, Outcast Tackle, Stanley Jigs and Custom Angle Rods.
