(Oct. 12, 2009 - Lake Conroe, TX)... Anglers Quest 2009 Conroe Wednesday Series Championship is now in the books, and the Wednesday Series for Lake Conroe is complete for 2009. The event began on Friday evening with the presentation of the special " Anglers Quest AOY Goal Post" to the TIREMAX team and new "2009 Anglers of the Year", Chris Wilkerson & Tony Murray, they will receive free paid entries to all A/Q Conroe Wednesday Series Events in 2010. The Calcutta Auction followed and what an AWESOME Calcutta it was, as 17 teams were sold from $200 to $1450 and raised $7970.00 to add to the anglers pot. As at all Anglers Quest Championship auctions, there were 10 American Rodsmiths Limit Stix rods auctioned off to raise $ for the "Tournament of Champions" coming up on Lake Bob Sandlin in November.
The weather was cloudy & rainey with low 50’s at daybreak to low 60’s during the day with a brisk northeast breeze for both days of the event, which was held on Lake Conroe. As Day 1 got underway with the singing of the National Anthem by Miss Sara McElroy, the 20 qualified teams took off into the dim morning light from El Dorado Jack’s at 6:55 am. The anglers all had high hopes of garnering their portion of the $13,545.00 purse that was the payback at this Championship event. The water at Lake Conroe was in very good shape and was at approximately 1 1/4 ft below normal pool level. On day 1 the 20 teams brought in 9 limits of bass, 68 fish that totaled 217.95 lbs with a 3.20 avg. Day 2 produced 5 limits 45 fish-155.73 lbs and a 3.46 avg. After both days were complete there were 113 total bass caught with 14 limits-373.68 lbs and a 3.30 overall average weight.
The ZZ Lures team of Joe Mazzurko & Daryl Stewart from Willis ran their bass rig to many areas around the lake to probe the humps & ridges with brush in 6-20 ft water to bring in the heaviest 5 bass limit on day 1 at 18.92 lbs. Joe & Daryl reported culling several times while catching their bass on ZZ worms.
The second heaviest stringer to come to the scales on day 1 was the Ranger bass rig of Kyle Nitschke from Conroe & Tyler Goetzman from Willis, they came to the scales with 4 bass that tipped the scales at 18.10 lbs to hold down the 2nd position and reported catching their bass in creeks north of the 1097 bridge.
The BassCat/Mercury team of Tony Hawk from Humble & Jeremy Murray from Porter held down 3rd on day 1 with 5 bass that tipped the scales at 17.72 lbs. They reported a good bite with their American Rodsmiths rods late in the day tipped with Tx rigged worms around scattered & flooded brush.
The Tiremax wrapped BassCat/Mercury Anglers of the Year team of Chris Wilkerson from Woodlands & Tony Murray from Porter came to the scales on day 1 with 5 bass that weighed 16.56 lbs to hold down the 4th spot. They reported catching their bass casting Tx rigged worms & cranks in 6-15 ft water all over the lake.
Day 2 weigh-in was very exciting as a lot of the field still had a shot at collecting a great check for fishing in this event. Sunday morning after the singing of The National Anthem again by Miss Sara McElroy & boat check at El Dorado Jack’s the 2-man teams all motored towards the main lake to go to their favorite spots on the water at 6:55 am.
The Tiremax team of Chris Wilkerson & Tony Murray brought in 5 more bass on day 2 at 14.26 lbs to add to their 5 bass limit from day 1 of 16.56 lbs to give them 10 bass to boost their total to 30.82 lbs and claim 4th place and $575.00. Fortunately or Unfortunately for the Tiremax team, Mike Hudson purchased them in the Calcutta auction and pocketed $1035.00 for his $1450.00 purchase.
The team of Tony Hawk & Jeremy Murray came to the scales with another limit at 13.62 lbs to give them a 2-day total of 10 bass at 31.34 lbs to claim $750.00 and 3rd place. Tony & Jeremy did purchase their team in the Calcutta auction and laid claim to an additional $1595.00 for their 3rd place finish to give them a total payday of $2345.00. Tony & Jeremy wanted to Thank some of their sponsors, American Rodsmiths, BassCat/Mercury & Bowden Marine. The team of Jimmy Cole & Tony King brought in a 5 bass limit to the scales on day 1 at 16.05 lbs and another 5 bass limit at 15.30 lbs to give them a 2 day total of 10 bass at 31.35 lbs to finish in 2nd place and collect $1200.00. The 8.27 lber they brought in on day 2 stood up for the Big Bass of the event and made them an additional $500 to give them $1700.00. They failed to buy themselves in the Calcutta on Friday night, But Jimmy’s friend...Cherie purchased them for $500 and collected another check for the team of $2150.00 making them a $3850.00 payday. The winners of this Championship event was the husband & wife team of Mike & Barbara Parsons. They ran their bass rig to north & south creek areas both days and brought 5 bass in on day 1 at 14.85 lbs and then on day 2 they brought in another very impressive 5 bass limit at 17.35 lbs to give them a 10 bass total of 32.20 lbs. They did catch a 3 lber 15 minutes before the event was over to fill their day 2 limit. Mike & Barbara did buy 1/2 of themselves in the Calcutta from their owner Mike Hudson for $400.00. For their Championship efforts they took home $3495.00...not bad for a weekend of fishin, Good Job Guys & Gals!!
On day-2 Robert Baney & Betsy Desprez brought in the 2nd biggest bass of the event. It was a fine 8.15 lber that made them a kool $350.00 for that one bite.
Anglers Quest 2010 Schedules are now available online at the Anglers Quest website. The 1st event for the 2010 season will be the Saturday Series Team event on Sam Rayburn, January 2, at Mill Creek Park. The new Individual Series will also begin at Rayburn on January 3rd.
