(Oct. 05, 2009 - Lake Sam Rayburn TX)... Anglers Quest 2009 Rayburn Saturday Series Championship is now in the books, and the Saturday Series for Sam Rayburn is complete for 2009. The event began on Friday evening with the presentation of the special " Anglers Quest Goal Post" to the new "2009 Anglers of the Year", Cory Rambo & Rusty Clark, they will receive free paid entries to all A/Q Rayburn Saturday Series Events in 2010. The Calcutta Auction followed and sold teams from $65 to $1005 and raised $5800.00 to add to the anglers pot. As at all Anglers Quest Championship auctions, there were 10 American Rodsmiths Limit Stix rods auctioned off to raise $ for the "Tournament of Champions" coming up on Lake Bob Sandlin in November. The weather was clear with mid 50’s at daybreak to mid 80’s during the day with a brisk southeast breeze for both days of the event, which was held both days on Sam Rayburn. As Day 1 got underway with the playing of the National Anthem and the 27 qualified teams taking off into the dim morning light from the Mill Creek Park ramp at 6:45 am. All the anglers were in hopes of garnering a portion of the $17,150.00 purse that was the payback by Anglers Quest at this Championship event. The water at Big Sam was in decent shape and was at approximately 4 3/4 ft below normal pool level.
On day 1 the 27 teams brought in 19 limits of bass, 113 fish that totaled 275.39 lbs with a 2.43 avg. Day 2 produced 15 limits 94 fish-254.86 lbs and a 2.71 avg. After both days were complete there were 207 total bass caught with 34 limits-530.25 lbs and a 2.56 overall average weight.
The team of Brian Bright from Orange, Tx & Chris Nequent from Buna, Tx ran their Skeeter/Yamaha from mid to south lake points with isolated patchy grass spots in 1-6 ft water to bring in the heaviest 5 bass limit on day 1 at 20.88 lbs. Brian & Chris reported culling nine times while catching their bass on rattle traps.
The second heaviest stringer to come to the scales on day 1 was the Al’s Performance Marine tuned Bullett/Mercury team of Tommy Hill & Mike Griffin from Kountze, Tx they came to the scales with a limit of 5 bass at 18.10 lbs to hold down the 2nd position and reported catching their bass with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with top water baits around south main lake points with grass in 6-8 ft water.
The 2009 AOY Ranger/Evinrude team of Cory Rambo from Orange, Tx & Rusty Clark from Sam Rayburn, Tx held down 3rd on day 1 with 5 bass that tipped the scales at 15.26 lbs. They reported catching their bass with their Castaway rods tipped with cranks in 8-10 ft depths around isolated grass clumps. Cory & Rusty were very appreciative of their sponsors: Golden Triangle Industries, Castaway Rods, Stanley Jigs, Hummingbird, MinnKota Trolling Motors & Ranger Boats.
The Ranger/Mercury team of Larry Ford from Kirbyville, Tx & Mark Nelson from Silsbee, Tx came to the scales on day 1 with 5 bass that weighed 15.02 lbs to hold down the 4th spot. They reported catching their bass on top water baits in 3-8 ft water around grass on the south end of the lake. Larry caught the 6.50 lb lunker that held up for the 2nd biggest bass of the event.
Ben Vaughn & Michael Latham from Lufkin, Tx ran Ben’s Champion/Mercury bass rig to 8-10 foot main lake grass beds to fish with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with Tx rigged ole monster worms to hold down the 5th place on day 1 with a total of 5 bass at 13.46 lbs. Michael & Ben wanted to give some credit to Royal Purple Oil for their fine products and also say thanks to Champion Boats, Interstate Batteries, Tri Lakes Tackle & Nichols Marine for their support this season.
It was the Skeeter/Yamaha team of Al Taylor & Richard Muddiman from Pearland, Tx bringing in 5 bass that tipped the scales at 13.30 lbs to hold down the 6th spot on day 1.
Sunday morning the weather had worsened through the night with heavy rain, thunder & lightening going on and the anglers were allowed to trailor to their choice of boat launches.
The team Bill Rogers from Jasper, Tx & Brian Branum from Brookeland, Tx brought in another 5 bass on day 2 at 19.38 lbs for a 10 bass limit for the event to boost their 2-day total to 26.23 lbs and claim 6th place and $400.00.
The team of John Salamone & Josh Guy came to the scales with another limit of bass at 16.09 lbs to give them a 2 day total of 10 bass at 26.38 lbs. John admitted to having to down size to small worms on day 2 to make his bass bite. John & Josh failed to purchase their team in the Calcutta auction for $225.00 But, Larry Cotten did and laid claim to $405.00 for their 5th place finish.
Larry Ford & Mark Nelson brought in another 5 bass at 11.63 lbs to give them 10 bass for the 2 days and a total of 26.65 lbs and claim 4th place. Larry & Mark did purchase their team in the Calcutta auction for $100.00. Mark had wagered a $20 guess in the "guess the weight pot" on Friday night and ended up winning the pot with the closest guess. Larry & Mark’s weekend paid them back $2640.00.
The team of Danny Cross & Glen Kimble from Lufkin, Tx brought a 5 bass limit of 9.23 lbs to the scales on day 1 and another limit on day 2 at 18.39 lbs to give them a 2 day total of 10 bass at 27.62 lbs to finish in 3rd place. They reported catching all their bass on American Rodsmiths rods tipped with buzz baits & pop-r’s over grass in 8-12 ft water at mid lake. They did buy themselves in the Calcutta for $65 and collected a check for $2410.00 for their finish. They wanted to give thanks to their wife’s and the Lord.
The 2009 AOY Ranger/Evinrude team of Cory Rambo & Rusty Clark held down 3rd on day 1 with 5 bass at 15.26 lbs. They brought in another limit of bass on day 2 at 20.02 lbs caught with their Castaway rods tipped with cranks in 8-10 ft depths around isolated grass clumps to give them a 2-day total of 35.28 lbs and collected $2500.00. They failed to buy their team at the Calcutta auction But, Hulon Walker did for $1005.00 and collected $1390.00. The winners of this Rayburn Championship event were Tommy Hill & Mike Griffin. They run their Al’s Performance Marine tuned Bullett/Mercury bass rig to the south main lake point areas to fish 6-8 ft water around grass with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with ribbit baits and a yellow magic to bring 5 bass in on day 1 at 18.10 lbs and then on day 2 they brought in another very impressive 5 bass limit at 18.04 lbs to give them a 10 bass total of 36.14 lbs. One of their bass on day 2 was a fine 6.64 lber, the Big Bass of the event worth $810.00. Tommy & Mike did buy themselves in the Calcutta for a measley $280.00. For their Championship efforts the team took home $4000 for 1st place, $810 for 1st Big Bass and another $1915.00 for their % of the Calcutta pot making the team a total of $6725.00....not bad for a weekend of fishin, Good Job Guys!!
