Anglers Quest 2009 Sam Rayburn Saturday Series #6 out of Twin Dikes Park in Sam Rayburn, Tx began this event with 70 teamed anglers showing up to fish for the $4720.00 purse. This 6th event of 2009 began at safe light, which was 5:45 am. Weigh in was conducted at 3:15 pm. Barbara & Mr Bill do want to apologize for the problems that were caused by not having any electricity at this make shift site. On top of this, the A/Q generator quit us at 4:30 am Saturday morning and we were forced to have a small generator delivered to us by the folks from Catfish Galore, Wayne & Eleanor Smith (Barb’s Dad & Mom) it was in place by weigh in time to be able to do weigh in. This Rayburn Saturday Series after all 9 events will provide the Team Anglers of the year with free entries to all 2010 Rayburn Saturday Series events. The Top 25 teams in pounds will qualify for the 2-day Championship in October on Sam Rayburn. A special Top 5 group of teams will qualify to go to the "Tournament of Champions" to be held on November 14-15 on Lake Bob Sandlin and will have a Guaranteed minimum $10,000.00 payout to the winning team. All Anglers Quest Championships include Calcutta auctions which builds the Championship purse to some very nice $$ to fish for, for a small entry fee of $155.00 per team. Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and about 1 1/2 foot below normal pool level with water temps running 75-78 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a calm 72 degrees with a warming to 92 degrees by weigh in time. The fish catching was good on Big Sam today as there were 20 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 125 bass at 298.52 lbs making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.38 lb.
The team of Randy Despino & Kevin Lasyone from Colfax, La ran Randy’s Skeeter/Yamaha bass rig to mid main lake points with grass to catch their bass with American Rodsmiths rods tipped with cranks & C-rigged worms in 15-20 ft of water. They had a limit of keepers in the boat by 9 am but culled on an all day bite 15 times by 3 pm to finish in 1st place with a nice sack of 19.60 lbs and collect $1620.00 for their day on the water.
Alan Moore & Kevin Marshall from Lufkin, Tx ran Alan’s Ranger/Rude to mid main lake grass lines in 12’ water to finish in 2nd place with a total of 15 bass culled to their best 5 bass at 16.84 lbs. They took home $880.00 for their day on the water.
Chris McCall from Jasper, Tx & Tommy Dickerson from Orange, Tx ran Chris’s Ranger/Yamaha bass rig to 12-14 foot main lake grass beds to fish with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with Santone jigs to finish in 3rd place with a total of 5 bass at 15.97 lbs. They took home $700.00 for their day on the water.
The team of Larry Ford from Kirbyville, Tx & Mark Nelson from Silsbee, Tx ran Larry’s Ranger/Mercury to various mid lake grass lines in 3-6’ water to catch their 5 bass limit on Falcon rods tipped with top water ribbits. Larry & Mark also had the 1st Big Bass of the event, a fine 5.91 lber that paid them an additional $150.00 making them a $585.00 payday for a 4th place finish.
Ben Vaughn & Michael Latham from Lufkin, Tx ran Ben’s Champion/Mercury bass rig to 8-10 foot main lake grass beds to fish with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with Tx rigged ole monster worms to finish in 5th place with a total of 5 bass at 15.32 lbs. They took home $275.00 for their day on the water. Ben & Michael wanted Thank Champion Boats, Interstate Batteries, Tri Lakes Tackle & Nichols Marine for their support. There was 2 more Money spots today as Tommy Howard & Gene Thornton collected $180.00 for 6th and Chris DiBerardino finished in 7th and collected $155.00 for their day on the water.
The 2008 AOY team from the Sam Rayburn Saturday Series, Matt Purghan from Orange, Tx & Trey Smith from Bridge City, Tx ran Trey’s BassCat/Yamaha bass rig to mid lake areas to probe the 10-12’ grass with their American Rodsmiths rods tipped with Tx rigged brush hogs and bring in 5 bass at 12.50 lbs to garner the first place out of the money. Had they been present at weigh in, they would have collected 2 bags of ZZ Lures. Trey fished alone today wanted to issue a special Thanks to Jordan Marine for their support.
